Ioane Ioane‘s multidiscipline practice involves sculpture, painting, installations and performance rituals and often acknowledges the spiritual and transitional nature of the space between (‘Va’) as a place of respect, transformation – birth and becoming.
Ioane is a senior Pacific artist with 30 years of Kaupapa Pasifika in his role as a visual creative social commentator and mentor.
In 1996 Ioane was a finalist for the Saachi and Saachi Art Awards and in 2005 he was awarded the Creative New Zealand Prize for Innovation and Excellence Art Award, as well as receiving a number of public commissions.
His work belongs in a number of private and public collections including the Cambridge Museum of Anthropology, England, Te Papa Tongarewa Museum of New Zealand Wellington, Auckland Art Gallery, Auckland and Tijibou Cultural Museum Centre Noumea.
Ioane is currently Artist in Residence at the Macmillan Brown Centre for Pacific Studies at the University of Canterbury. He represented New Zealand at the 12th South Pacific Arts Festival in Guam in May 2016 where he also presented an exhibition at the Guam Museum.
